    The small timer

    Hi

Problem Getting people to the web site and actually making a sale. Years ago befor e-bay google ect you could put up one item on a web page and some one would send a cheque or a PO money order and you would sell it, now its almost impossible to get people to your web page with out paying for it.

This needs a rewrite will edit when I have more time JohnC

    Hi JohnC,

Thank you for using our adCenter forums. Great discussion - if I'm reading it correctly.

You seem to be asking about the future of organic SEO in relation to pay-per-click.

There are other people on the forums and in the adCenter group who have good insights. Check out our blog.

I'll bug them to jump in here too.

Meanwhile, it reminded me of this post I saw last month. http://www.shoemoney.com/2008/05/07/seo-has-no-future/ I'm not endorsing or refuting the premise, but it was a fascinating discussion. Most seem to agree with you that it's harder.

    Hi JohnC

This is an eternal debate which has plenty of legs. When you say before Google and eBay how did people find your website? Through a search engine? Which one?

As more businesses come online of course the competition gets greater, especially in more generic areas and for more generic search terms.

Search Engine Optimization isn't difficult if you get the basics right - indexable content, rich and engaging & decent navigation. The tricky part is link-buidling and gaining more authority with search engines in order to rank higher in the SERPS.

Offline optimization is key too: Is your website address on all your collateral - business cards etc? On the side of your van? Are you able to get PR in magazines or the local paper? Have you considered social media? Can you honestly say your site is optimised for usability too?

PPC doesn't need to be super-expensive. Chasing tail terms can be cost effective. You may not get lots of volume but you have the chance to nab a sale on a cheap keyword right when the consumer is ready to purchase.

    Cheers

John, you're quie right. The web is getting increasingly competitive, as Mel pointed out. The public also expects much more than they did back in the day when the web was young. The sheer volume of web sites now dictates intense competition for the finite number of visitors. It's less a medium for the small businessman than it was. It requires more expertise to create a competitive site, more relevant content (a big expense), deeper discounts. Fortunately there are resources that allow the small business to compete even without deep pockets, resources like Office Live Small Business.
